Bandcrush: September Girls

Happy 2013!

We hope you had a fun Christmas and Hogmanay, and are fully refreshed and ready for whatever challenge this year will bring.

Over at Tidal Wave towers we’re gearing up for another year of reviews, interviews, fun, frolics and nudity. Well, maybe not that last one, but we do promise the best new releases and early calls on some rather fabulous new bands.

It’s also our New Year’s resolution to talk a bit more about some Irish bands – it’s a rather poor show that music from the country of our birth has barely featured on these pages. So on that note, let’s consider Dublin’s September Girls.

As you might expect they’re girls. Five of them to be precise, and as many modern ‘girl bands’ do, they play a brand of loud, lovely, fuzzed-up, yet somehow old-fashioned pop in the vein of Veronica Falls and Vivian Girls.

There’s a near Phil Spector-ish feel to the recordings out on Soft Power Records (home to the super-cute Spook School), not least split 7″ Green Eyed/Danny Wood. Naturally, we spoke to singer/guitarist Caoimhe before Christmas to find out more.

So who the hell are you?

We are five friends who live in Dublin who make music together and want to play gigs all over the place.

Describe your sound in ten words or less!

Fuzzy, creepy, reverb-y, LOUD DRUMS, sweetish vocals, harmonies, and swirling organs!

September Girls? What’s wrong with October, likes???

Well Paula (bass/vocals) loves October because it’s the month of her birthday…… But September suited us because that’s when we officially started as a band and I really live The Bangles cover of the Big Star song too.

What sort of music inspires you?

Sixties girl groups, Phil Spector, garage bands, The Jesus and Mary Chain.

Tell us about the Green Eyed single.

Well the song was written about jealousy and mistrust, and the chorus is done in a call and response kind of way to show the kind of tug of war you have in your head when you’re not sure if you’re just being crazy or your suspicions are true… And then we shoved on pounding drums and shitloads of reverb and noise.

How did you get involved with Soft Power?

They got in touch with us over the summer around the time we played Indietracks and we brought out our first tape. That was followed with our Green Eyed/Danny Wood 7″. It’s really nice to release music with such inspiring independent record labels and they’re such cool people too.

Can we expect to see you play in Scotland soon?

Hopefully in the New Year!

Yay! Have you plans for a full length release?

Yes! We’re currently working on our debut album. We’re writing and recording at the moment, and hopefully will have it ready to go by early spring.
